Chapter Six
Caister Weekender No. 1

Many promoters and disc jockeys had toyed with the idea of taking
the alldayer concept one step further by organising a whole weekend away, keeping the music as the main attraction. Up until now no promoter had dare take on the responsibility that an event of
this nature would entail.
It is Robbie Vincent who must take credit for the idea becoming a reality, for it was he who told Showstopper Promotions of the Ladbrokes’ holiday camp situated in Caister, near Great Yarmouth, in Norfolk. It was also Robbie Vincent who finally persuaded Showstoppers into undertaking the first soul weekender.
As a result of the massive exposure we disc jockeys were getting as a result of appearing at the Purley Alldayers, offers of work were pouring our way. One of the many venues we all had agreed to work at was the ‘Royalty’ in Southgate, that just so happens to be run by Showstoppers. When they approached us all to do this weekender, that they were thinking of organising, we all agreed as they had already convinced us that they were a professional outfit and what’s more they actually offered to pay us.
After carefully considering sites all over the country, Showstoppers finally decided that the camp that Robbie Vincent had first suggested was the best site available for the event.
The soul weekender was planned, advertised and very quickly sold out.
